Four machines shaped how the kyte Z1 theme looks. Here is what we took from each.
Braun TG 1000, 1970
Dieter Rams gave the tape machine one red key. Everything else is grey and does one thing. Our meeting recorder is drawn the same way: an instrument with a level meter, a counter, and the only red mark in the app.

Braun wall unit, 1960s
Rams’ audio units hang on two rails. Each module is its own box, the same height, the same grey. kyte’s screen is built like that: sidebar, chat and panel are separate frames on one grid, and you move the rails.

Macintosh System 1, 1984
A window was a one-pixel line with a striped bar to grab it. When it floated, it cast one hard shadow. Our frames are that window, drawn in ink on paper.

The agent wants to write 3 rows to deals.csv.
IBM 3270, 1977
Business software began on this screen: labelled fields in a grid, a row of keys, one status line at the bottom. The layout was right the first time. We kept it and changed the chrome.
